Short Story Writing (Macquarie Community College)

Do you have a story to tell? Have you always wanted to learn how to write a short story? This course in Short Story Writing investigates elements of the craft short story writing, including: developing characters, voice, setting, dialogue and narrative structure. Participants will discover techniques to overcome writer’s block and engage in activities and exercises that inspire and develop their creative writing potential.

Short story ideas will be generated as well as a consideration of the short story as a particular form. Participants will engage in workshopping activities throughout the course with the aim of producing a minimum of one short story that is ready to submit for publication, in a writing competition or similar.

The experience of short story writing needs to be a joyous and creative one. Classes include the use of meditation techniques to help writers tap into their unique creative potential.
